چکیده

Gravitational microlensing is a powerful tool allowing one to probe the structure of quasars on sub-parsec scale. We report recent results, focusing on the broad absorption and emission line regions. In particular microlensing reveals the intrinsic absorption hidden in the P Cygni-type line profiles observed in the broad absorption line quasar H1413+117, as well as the existence of an extended continuum source. In addition, polarization microlensing provides constraints on the scattering region. In the quasar Q2237+030, microlensing differently distorts the Hα and CIV broad emission line profiles, indicating that the lowand high-ionization broad emission lines must originate from regions with distinct kinematical properties. We also present simulations of the effect of microlensing on line profiles considering simple but representative models of the broad emission line region. Comparison of observations to simulations allows us to conclude that the Hα emitting region in Q2237+030 is best represented by a Keplerian disk.

Gravitational microlensing of quasar Broad Line Regions: the influence of fractal structures

Recent models for the emission clouds within the Broad Line Region of quasars suggest that they are due to transient overdensities within an overall turbulent medium. If this were the case, the broad line emission would spatially appear fractal, possessing structure on a range of scales. This paper examines the influence of such fractal structure when a quasar is microlensed by a population of ...

Chandra Observations of the Cloverleaf Quasar H 1413+117: a Unique Laboratory for Microlensing Studies of a Lobal Quasar

We present new results uncovered by a re-analysis of a Chandra observation of the gravitationally lensed, low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) quasar H 1413+117. Previous analyses of the same Chandra observation led to the detection of a strong, redshifted Fe Kα line from the combined spectrum of all images. We show that the redshifted Fe Kα line is only significant in the brighter imag...

Differential Microlensing of the Continuum and Broad Emission Lines in the Most Anomalous Lensed Quasar

SDSS J0924+0219 is the most glaring example of a gravitational lens with anomalous flux ratios: optical broad-band photometry shows image D to be a factor of 12 fainter than expected from smooth lens models. We report spectroscopy showing that the anomaly is present in the broad emission line flux ratios as well. There are differences between the emission line and continuum flux ratios: the A/D...

Gravitational microlensing of quasar broad line regions at large optical depths

Recent estimates of the scale of structures at the heart of quasars suggest that the region responsible for the broad line emission are smaller than previously thought. With this revision of scale, the broad line region is amenable to the influence of gravitational microlensing. This study investigates the influence on microlensing at high optical depth on a number of current models of the Broa...

Lens-aided Multi-angle Spectroscopy (lamas) Reveals Small-scale Outflow Structure in Quasars

Spectral differences between lensed quasar image components are common. Since lensing is intrinsically achromatic, these differences are typically explained as the effect of either microlensing, or as light path time delays sampling intrinsic quasar spectral variability. Here we advance a novel third hypothesis: some spectral differences are due to small line-of-sight differences through quasar...
